Performance Grade bitumen, commonly shortened to PG bitumen, is an asphalt binder classified under the Superpave system rather than by the traditional penetration method. Instead of describing hardness at a single test temperature, PG bitumen is graded by the actual high and low pavement temperatures it can withstand without failing.
Each grade is written as two numbers for example, PG 64-22. The first number is the average maximum pavement temperature, in degrees Celsius, the binder can resist without excessive rutting. The second number is the minimum pavement temperature it can withstand without becoming brittle and cracking. Grades step in six degree increments on both ends, which lets an engineer match a binder to a specific climate and traffic profile more precisely than the older penetration system allows.
This matters for buyers because it shifts the selection question from “how hard is this bitumen” to “will this bitumen actually hold up in the temperature range my pavement will experience.” A PG grade chosen correctly for its climate resists deformation under sustained heat and heavy traffic while retaining enough flexibility in cold conditions to avoid thermal cracking two failure modes that are difficult to address simultaneously with a penetration-graded binder alone.
PG bitumen begins from the same crude oil residue as other bitumen grades, but the refining and blending process is adjusted specifically to hit target high and low temperature performance thresholds rather than a single penetration value. This typically involves closer control of the base binder’s composition, and in many PG grades, the use of polymer modification to widen the usable temperature range beyond what an unmodified binder can achieve.
Because a PG grade is defined by how the binder behaves under simulated field conditions rather than a single laboratory hardness reading, testing is correspondingly more involved. Each production batch is evaluated for high-temperature stiffness and rutting resistance, low temperature cracking resistance, viscosity, and resistance to short-term ageing that occurs during mixing and paving. These results confirm the batch genuinely meets its stated PG classification before it’s approved for shipment, rather than simply falling within a penetration range.
